What I'm Reading Now: 12 May 07

Reading? Who has time to read?

No, really, it's been an insanely busy couple of weeks. I've looked at a few magazine articles, and that's about it. I'm hoping I'll be able to get to a library book, possibly even two,  before I have to return it this week. Otherwise, it looks like I'll be rather occupied for a few more weeks.

However, the library book sale is on this weekend, and I will be there, as always, when the doors open. I'll probably be posting a list of my finds Thursday or Friday. If you're in the area, you should check it out.

April 30

This morning I looked out the window and spotted two new arrivals.  The Harris sparrow and the white crowned sparrow made its return. They have been feeding around my trees and the bird feeders.  Both species are ground feeders.

Birds and windows

Yesterday I needed to wash the windows because of what the birds had done. I carefully washed all the windows of the house and felt quite proud of myself. When I came in, I was told that I had missed one window. I was adamant that I hadn't missed any. However, when I looked, I noticed that the birds had been busy. By the time I got back out a few minutes later, I had to reclean three windows. Today all south-facing windows have bird droppings on them. I'll wait until the wind dies down before I clean again.

In the meantime, we do have the grackles, red winged and other blackbirds on the lawn. Yesterday morning we saw a female purple finch. The white throated sparrows are still around and are waiting for the white crowned and Harris sparrows.

In Honour of a Friend

You have noticed that the site looks different today. I have done this in honour of our friend, Carl Zacharias. Carl as most of you know was a contributor to this site, and one of Reinland's best know sons. We heard the news this morning that Carl died. At this point we do not have any other information, but will update the site as we know more about funeral arrangements. You can also look at the family blog located at:http://lgrm.shutterfly.com/blog
